Another site with Analysis and Recommendations to speed up site is http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/
but the best way is to find a Hosting Provider that is fast some are really slow and others super fast.....
other than that nothing you do will help except reducing the size of the code and images to a bare minimum per page displayed

what form of DNS resolution do you have?

I'm stuck with a dynamic IP address and a freeware dns updater, not the best form of DNS resolving and is why the slowness for me
a test for dns timing can be found at http://www.DNSSTUFF.com and select DNS Timing yeah it's not going to give you any more than information but it can be used to test against others circumstances ie I'm in australia im .biz etc
[Edit img out] only money will speed up my site and that's not likely to occur :D

so what are your speeds? are they really slow compared to other sites running the same code?
cause then it comes down to your network, hardware and software

Well that is OK because the say less than 8 seconds via 56k is fine for users not to get upset, the only seeming slow point is the image for you banner ads
10k at every page refresh 102 hits = 1mb EDIT: just checked its not the image size its the script size but same applies
